Minutes from Nov. 17 read and approved

Timothy Fairbanks-Clouser withdrew his candidacy by email on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2022.

The board was in executive session from 4:30 pm. to 4:35 p.m.

The board returned to public session to vote on the spring 2023 EIC

Executive Session

The board went into executive session from 5:15 p.m. 5:30 p.m.

Public Session

The board returned to public session for a vote at 5:30 p.m.

Two of the three EIC candidates received the same number of votes, resulting in a tie. 

Board voted unanimously to hold special session for runoff election between Tim and Mikayla at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1. Each candidate will have a change to present again.

Advertising manager Taylor Gonzales

• New ads: Haunted Palouse for print/online; working with Student Affairs marketing
• Looking ahead to WSECU ads for the spring
• Reaching out to local businesses

Yearbook editor Trinity Watkins

• Struggling with moving pages electronically, shifted back to using thumb drives. Will connect with ASIS and troubleshoot the issues
• Creating group pages, including multicultural centers at the CUB
• Going with artwork instead of photo on the cover
• All staff meeting on Oct. 21. Meeting once a month and holding one-on-ones weekly
• Created a poster to advertise the yearbook
• Trying to work better with Evergreen photo editors

• Dummying the paper each week
• Redesigned Haunted Palouse ad for online
• Revising The Daily Evergreen logo
• Cover created for breast cancer awareness; upcoming covers for Halloween, and sex, drugs and rock ‘n‘ roll editions.

• FY2023 has a predicted balance of ($16,890), with an additional $43,558 in accounts receivable pending, making a possible YE of $26,668
  • Student Referendum fee A/R: $27,383

New Business

ASWSU membership – Revisited previous discussion of board membership. Richard noted that board has three ASWSU seats, two GPSA seats and one newsroom seat.  The suggestion is to reduce the ASWSU by one and increase the newsroom to two, adding the managing editor as a board member.

ASWSU representatives Sydney Berger and Ashtyn Gates agreed with the proposal.

Vote set for Thursday, Nov. 17.

Content advisor – Richard said The Daily Evergreen will be piloting a program this spring under which Student Media hires a Murrow College faculty member as content adviser for several hours a week.

Next board meeting: The next board meeting will be held a week early, on Thursday, Nov. 17, due to Thanksgiving break.

Emma gave a brief presentation on why she is applying for the position of graphics manager. The board inquired about her training in accessibility, then went into executive session at 4:21.  The board voted unanimously to confirm Emma Hewitt as graphics manager, and left executive session at about 4:30.

Advertising manager Taylor Gonzales

• Contacted WSECU for advertising; it is hoping to advertise in the spring
• Reaching out to local businesses, Haunted Palouse, and ski resorts for advertising

Yearbook editor Trinity Watkins

• Yearbook theme: “Trains” and “Next Stop, Your Home Away from Home”
• Using Air Table for photos
• Meeting once a month one-on-one with staff
• Spent the last month hiring staff

Graphics manager Emma Hewitt

• Completed three covers (Week of Welcome, football and Homecoming)
• Upcoming covers: Halloween; Sex, Drugs and Rock n’ Roll; and breast cancer awareness

Fiscal specialist K. Denise Boyd

• FY2023 has a predicted balance of $18,496, based on accounts receivables being collected.

New Business

• ASWSU membership – Richard said there is only one board position specifically allocated to the newsroom, yet three for student government. He proposed that the three positions held by ASWSU be reduced to two and the remaining one be filled by the Evergreen managing editor.

Lorena proposed that discussion be tabled until our next meeting since no ASWSU board members were present. Lorena will be sending a formal invitation to Sydney Berger, ASWSU member, to attend our next meeting.

• Archiving The Daily Evergreen electronic articles – Lorena revisited the issue of preserving electronic articles. Richard said SNO, which hosts The Daily Evergreen, will let us download all of the articles.  Richard will email Lorena and Mark O’English with the details.

• The next board meeting will be Thursday, Oct. 20, a week early due to the home football game on Thursday, Oct. 27.

Daily Evergreen editor-in-chief Sandi Kobiesa

• Production night, Jan. 26: Four of our editors were out with COVID-19; three worked from home.  The production staff came up with solutions on how to export the pages and put the paper out on time.
• Training new editors: one-on-one sessions since they have little knowledge of the software used for newspaper production
• New sections: Mint has become Culture and we created a multimedia editor.
• E-newsletter has been launched
• Podcast created and is presented every Friday
• Additional copy editor added to staff
• Adjustments have been made to the budget to accommodate the increased staff

Advertising manager Taylor Gonzales. (Report given by Miller)

• Planned Parenthood is renewing its advertising
• We have Career Fair print ads and a front-page banner
• Our student office assistant is training as an advertising representative and is reaching out to local businesses

• Yearbook pages will be between 160-200 or so.
• Content for many pages has been assigned
• Hired two section editors, and seeking a third

• Hired a new deputy graphics manager who helped with the newsletter and is redesigning the religious directory and classifieds
• Training new deputy graphics manager with the intention of promoting her to the graphics manager position for the 2022-2023 academic year

• Projected FY22 is $16,248

New Business

Continuation of discussion on filling board seat now reserved for Business & Finance representative.

• Board decided to fill the position with an alumni/community member
• Next step is a vote to change bylaws to recategorize the position.

Comments

• Shors: The editorial today sparked a lot of interest on campus today, some liked it, some didn’t.
• O’English: It would be nice if we could publish more letters to the editor.
